Pouchong (also known as Baozhong, meaning “wrapped tea” in Chinese) is a lightly oxidised Taiwanese oolong that sits somewhere between green tea and oolong. Because it is so lightly oxidised, it is often grouped more closely with green tea, while still retaining the smooth character and complexity of oolong.
Cherished for its delicate floral fragrance and clean, refreshing taste, Pouchong offers an approachable entry into this celebrated tea style, light, elegant and ideal for everyday enjoyment. Perfect for both casual drinkers and connoisseurs alike, it highlights the elegance of Taiwanese tea craftsmanship.
Pouchong is a lightly oxidised tea originating from northern Taiwan, particularly near Pinglin and Wenshan. It is known for its soft floral fragrance and clean, semi-green character. This version delivers the classic Pouchong experience with excellent balance and great value for daily sipping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pouchong (Baozhong) a Green Tea or an Oolong?
Pouchong (Baozhong) often causes confusion because it sits between green tea and oolong in terms of processing.
- Technically: It’s classified as an oolong tea.
- Oxidation level: Very low, usually 8–15%, making it much closer to a green tea than most oolongs.
- Flavour profile: Fresh, floral, and lightly sweet — often mistaken for green tea because it lacks the roastiness or deeper oxidation of other oolongs.
- Name origin: Baozhong (“wrapped tea”) comes from the traditional practice of wrapping the leaves in paper during drying.
Does it re-steep well?
Yes — this version rewards you with clear and fragrant second and third infusions.
Is Pouchong lighter in caffeine than other oolongs?
Generally yes — due to lighter oxidation and processing, it's gentler but still delivers a mild tea energy boost.
Should I store it differently than other teas?
Store in an airtight container away from moisture and strong odors to preserve its delicate floral aroma.
Should I Add Milk to Pouchong Tea?
Pouchong (Baozhong) is a very light and delicate oolong, often closer to green tea in taste. Because of its subtle floral and fresh notes, it’s best enjoyed without milk — adding dairy would overwhelm its natural flavour. If you prefer a tea with milk, a more robust oolong or a Taiwanese black tea may be a better fit.
What are the benefits of Pouchong Tea?
Pouchong is a lightly oxidised oolong tea, rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, which may support heart health, aid digestion, and promote overall wellbeing. Like other oolongs, it contains moderate caffeine for a gentle energy boost. For a more detailed look at the health benefits of oolong teas, see our guide: Benefits of Oolong Tea.
