Souchong Tea
Souchong Oolong Tea is a traditional style of Taiwanese oolong known for its deeper character, smooth body, and gently roasted finish. Produced in Taiwan using time-honoured tea-making techniques, this tea sits towards the richer end of the oolong spectrum, offering a more developed flavour profile than many lighter Taiwanese oolongs.
Made from carefully selected mature leaves, Souchong Oolong is typically more oxidised than greener styles of oolong loose leaf tea. The leaves are carefully processed and lightly roasted, allowing the tea to develop a warm, rounded flavour with nutty notes and a gentle roasted depth. When brewed, the leaves gradually unfurl to release a smooth and aromatic infusion with a rich amber colour.
As with many traditional Taiwanese teas, the craftsmanship behind Souchong Oolong plays an important role in shaping its final character. Careful oxidation, rolling, and roasting help create a balanced tea that can be enjoyed across multiple infusions, revealing subtle layers of flavour with each brew.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Souchong Oolong tea?
Souchong Oolong is a traditional style of Taiwanese tea made from more mature tea leaves that are allowed to oxidise further than greener oolong styles. This process creates a richer flavour with nutty notes and gentle roasted warmth while still maintaining the smooth character typical of oolong tea.
Is Souchong Oolong the same as Lapsang Souchong?
No. Although the names are similar, they are very different teas. Lapsang Souchong is a smoked Chinese black tea, while Souchong Oolong is an oolong tea that is not smoked. Instead, it develops its flavour through oxidation and careful roasting during processing.
How does Souchong Oolong taste?
Souchong Oolong has a smooth and naturally sweet flavour with notes of honey, ripe fruit and gentle roasted warmth. Compared with lighter oolong teas, it offers a fuller body and deeper character while still remaining balanced and easy to drink.
Can Souchong Oolong be brewed multiple times?
Yes. Like most high-quality loose leaf tea, Souchong Oolong can be brewed several times. Each infusion reveals slightly different flavours as the leaves gradually open, making it an enjoyable tea to explore over multiple brews.
Is Souchong Oolong suitable for beginners?
Yes. Its smooth sweetness and balanced flavour make it a great introduction to the world of oolong tea. If you are exploring the different types of tea, Souchong Oolong offers a good middle ground between lighter oolong styles and darker, more oxidised teas.
